Miami rapper Jacki-O, who gained notoriety with her explicit “Nookie” single, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy declaring debts totaling $144,225 and assets of just $1,340.
The bankruptcy, which was just weeks ago, wipes her slate of debts, which ranged from Bally's Total Fitness to the IRS to Verizon Wireless. More importantly, under the law, the bankruptcy voids personal services agreements, such as a recording contract, if terms of the deal inhibit the debtor's getting back on solid financial footing. Such was case with Jacki-O, who had a deal for some five records with Miami's Poe Boy Entertainment and a distribution agreement with TVT Records, said her lawyer Richard C. Wolfe.
“Baby-artist contracts are inherently one-sided,'' Wolfe told reporters. “This was particularly one-sided. She was given a small advance and since then she hasn't been given one penny in royalties.”
Although voiding her contracts was a key strategy behind the bankruptcy, Jacki was legitimately broke, said her bankruptcy attorney Susan D. Lasky. Jacki reported brings home a monthly income of about $800 from appearances and shows.
In 2004, her album was released, Poe Little Rich Girl. The album earned solid reviews but did not boost her career or income as she had banked on.
Currently, she is writing material for a new album called Jack the Ripper. The lead track is “Monkey.”
